Driving Questions

Look at the three Driving Questions below and in your groups, decide which question you would like to answer. Each group can answer the same question or each group can answer different questions. The choice is yours!

  1. What can we learn about flight by building and testing flying models?
  2. How can we help protect birds in our community?
  3. How can we create a storybook to teach younger children about birds?

Possible Ideas

Flight Model Save the Birds Bird Tales

What can we learn about flight by building and testing flying models?

Possible Idea: Bird Flight Model

Activities:

  • Study the wing shapes of different birds.
  • Build simple gliders or paper airplanes inspired by bird wings.
  • Test how far and fast different models fly and record observations.
  • Compare bird flight to bat flight or research early human flight inventions.
  • Once all the data has been collected, present the ideas and findings to others.

How can we help protect birds in our community?

Possible Idea: Save the Birds Campaign

Activities:

  • Research threats to birds (e.g., habitat loss, pollution).
  • Design posters, brochures, or videos to spread awareness about how to protect birds.
  • Share the campaign with parents or community members.
  • Partner with a local wildlife organization or start a “Bird Patrol” group.
  • If partnering isn’t possible, get volunteers from the local community to help with the patrols.

How can we create a storybook to teach younger children about birds?

Possible Idea: Bird Tales Storybook

Activities:

  • Choose a favourite bird and write a creative story about its life and adventures.
  • Include facts about the bird (e.g., where it lives, what it eats, and how it cares for its young).
  • Illustrate and bind the stories into books to share with younger classes.
  • Record the stories as an audiobook or animation project using digital tools, too.
  • Hold a storybook day for younger learners to listen to the stories live.
